Director Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland had a huge opening over the weekend, topping the box office with a $116.3 opening that was even bigger than the opening weekend take of Avatar. It also set new records with the biggest opening ever for a 3-D film and for a non-sequel. The film stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.
Opening in second place was the police drama Brooklyn's Finest, starring Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes and Vincent D'Onofrio. Shutter Island fell to third place after two weeks at Number One.
