(Detroit, MI) -- A Michigan congressman is saying that legislation stalled in the U.S. Senate would provide food safety oversight to prevent future problems similar to the current egg recall. According to Dearborn Democrat John Dingell, the House bill he authored would grant the Food and Drug Administration the authorities it needs to ensure safety of the nation's food supply. He wrote to fellow Democrat Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco in July over reports that she wants to add an amendment that has kept the bill from moving ahead. If passed, the bill would give the FDA authority to mandate recalls. Frequency of inspections would be increased and food trace-back capabilities would also be expanded.
