MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - The mental health needs of veterans will be discussed at a two-day conference that begins in Madison Tuesday. The Wisconsin Warrior Summit seeks to show communities how to respond better to the mental health needs of soldiers and their families. Not even doctors may recognize the mental strains of going from the military to civilian life.

Bob Curry, the head of a group which helps those returning from combat, said he was misdiagnosed with attention deficit disorder. He learned later that he really had post-traumatic stress disorder. Curry leads a group called Dry Hootch. He says the conference will attract numerous health workers who can learn which symptoms may be combat-related.

And once more is known about that, he says methods can be devised for providing treatments. A similar summit was held in Milwaukee this fall. This week’s meeting takes place Tuesday and Wednesday at Madison Area Technical College.
