TERRE HAUTE (WIBQ) - Authorities are warning elderly residents of scams that are aimed at separating them from their money. Some area residents have already received calls from someone telling them they won the lottery, a new car or even that they were victims of a scam and they are calling to help the person recover their losses. In just three cases, recently reported, the victims lost a total of $400,000.

Earlier this week law enforcement authorities called for increased awareness to stop these crimes. They say there are also four active fraud cases in Vigo County and there could be more but those victims have not come forward out of embarrassment. Not all the scams come on the phone and promise a windfall or too good to be true scenario. Some offers like work at home offers that require a cash outlay, are also scams.

If you are a victim of a scam, or suspect that someone is being victimized you should call police. It's also worth remembering the saying, "if it's too good to be true, it isn't" because that is the truth.
