(BALTIMORE, MD)(WKZO) - The man who revolutionized the tight end position in the NFL has died. Former Baltimore Colt John Mackey was 69, and suffered from dementia. Mackey and Johnny Unitas helped usher in the pass happy style of play in the NFL during the late 50s and through the 60s and 70s. Mackey later became an outspoken proponent of players rights as the president of the Players’ Association. The top tight end in college football each season is awarded the Mackey Award.
